Hi ! Welcome to Beyond the Therapy Box! My name is Lois.
I'm a HCPC /RCSLT registered Speech and Language Therapist with over 25 years experience in the NHS and independent practice.
I currently work part time for the NHS and I also home educate my child around my independent speech and language therapy practice.
Passionate about protecting childhood, valuing differences and learning through life and play, I am an experienced Home Educator /Unschooling mum / Worldschooling mum. I am really keen to offer non traditional support for those living and learning "outside" of the usual mainstream "boxes".
I have many years of experience supporting people from their early years through to older age using both traditional and creative therapy.
This has included working with people living with Dementia and Primary Progressive Aphasia as well as working within the paediatric department, in special schools , higher education colleges and in the community with Adults with Learning Disabilities..
I am also a qualified Early Years Professional (equivalent to teacher status) and until 2017 I managed two children's Day care centres in Herefordshire UK. During that time I worked closely with parents, early years staff and a range of other professionals.
I am thrilled to announce that I am now also a Certified Outdoor Therapist !

Beyond the Therapy Box
I recognise that everyone is an individual and on a unique journey through life.
For this reason as well as traditional speech and language therapy resources I am keen to offer more creative therapy ideas embracing an individuals abilities, strengths and interests, through everyday activities, indoors or out.
I aim to think "beyond" the traditional "therapy box" when possible.
I am really enthusiastic about the opportunities that technology and gaming provide for communication for people of all ages. I also believe it is important to develop communication through a range of mediums e.g. play, art, music, movement, sports, social/fun activities and when interacting with nature and animals.
I am prepared to think "far beyond" the traditional therapy box of ideas and believe that if an activity is positive for an individual then it is important to embrace this.
I hope to explore this further through my blog posts which you can find here and also on social media.
I recognise that accessing private therapy is not always possible for families so am keen to offer alternative online tools and resources such as digital downloads and online video courses to support you on your journey.
In addition to this I will occasionally open up my diary for bespoke online support and advice following a coaching model based upon either Adult:Child Interaction or Conversation Partner approaches. Please ask for further details regarding fees for bespoke coaching / therapy.

** NB Where more complex assessments are required extra time, sessions and assessment will be charged at the subsequent session hourly rate (currently £100). Detailed reports will also be charged at the subsequent session hourly rate. Assessment will be required prior to therapy session as per professional standards. Assessments by to other SLT's within 6 months may be accepted. Online assessment may need to be divided into two shorter video calls where appropriate.
